BIO

BIO

Symbion Project is the brainchild of electronic music composer/producer Kasson Crooker.

Over the past 2 decades of creating eclectic electronic music, Kasson has founded numerous bands (Symbion Project, Freezepop, ELYXR, Rocococo, and others) in numerous genres from downtempo, IDM, techno, ambient, synthpop, and classical synthesizer music.  Influenced by 80’s synthpop acts Depeche Mode and New Order, Massive Attack and Portishead in the 90’s, Royksopp and Air in the 00’s, Symbion Project strives to define its own aesthetic and songwriting style.

Over the past 10 full length albums, remixes, music videos, and videogame music, Symbion Project has constantly evolved while retaining the complex, sophisticated, cinematic sound that sets it apart from other electronic acts.

BACKSCATTER is the newest album released on 3/8/2019.  This album is a dark, brooding, instrumental album featuring moments of haunting beauty captured like insects in amber. Layers of vintage analog synths, distorted Japanese koto, and complex drum programming push BACKSCATTER into a heavier, more sonic territory than previous releases. My goal was to create a work where dark melancholia, anxiety and disillusion, and aching beauty could all co-exist.

Gishiki (2017) completes a trilogy of “classical synthesizer” albums started with Wound Up by God or the Devil (2007) & Contrapasso (2011). Inspired by the 8 virtues of Bushido (code of the Samurai) and minimalist traditional Japanese music, Gishiki blends vintage synthesizers, Koto, and windchimes to create lush, cinematic soundscapes. If the novel Neuromancer had a soundtrack, Gishiki would be it.  If you enjoy Brian Eno, Ryuichi Sakamoto, or Philip Glass, you will enjoy this album.

Arcadian is the 8th full-length album from Seattle-based electronic act Symbion Project. While previous releases have seen the moniker’s sound range from chaotic IDM to cinematic downtempo to classical synthesizer music, Arcadian sees the project nod to electronic-based, beat-driven song structures that draw circles around the world’s more melancholy realities. The album was released on September 9th, 2016.

At its core, Arcadian is a bittersweet focus on escapism, from the myriad ways our world can both connect and disenchant.  One of the striking elements of the album’s densely layered 11 songs are the vocals throughout the album. In addition to vocals from Kasson himself, the album features guest vocals from Seattle composer Briana Marela, Seattle’s Jenni Potts (most recently heard on Odesza’s “White Lies”), Finnish singer Markus Junnikkala (from the band MY), and long-time collaborator Melissa R Kaplan (Splashdown). The album features a handful of additional instrumentalists as well, with classical guitar and french horns adding depth to the layered electronic arrangements. The production also features numerous vintage synthesizers like a massive Moog Modular from the late 1960's which brings unexpected textures that current synths lack.
